Next Thursday, August 17th at 7:00 PM, I'll be hosting a very important literary event/discussion in Logos Bookstore on the Upper East Side. One of our speakers is Dr. Randall Balmer, author of Thy Kingdom Come: How the Religious Right Distorts the Faith and Threatens America: An Evangelical's Lament. A description of his book:

"19th-century evangelicals fought for the abolition of slavery, universal suffrage, and public education. But contemporary conservative activists have defaulted on this majestic legacy, embracing instead an agenda virtually indistinguishable from the Republican Party platform.

Abortion, gay marriage, intelligent design--the Religious Right is fighting, and winning, some of the most important political battles of the 21st century. How has evangelical Christianity become so entrenched in partisan politics?"

This will be a fascinating discussion about current events and the effects of politics on religion (and visa versa). We will also have a signing for those who are interested in getting a copy of this book. Our other speaker is Sherri Vinton, co-author of The Real Food Revival: Aisle by Aisle, Morsel by Morsel.
